Travis – Control Technology for Mainline Rail Traffic

Efficient operations management with the most advanced operations control technology

Control centres are the nerve centres of modern railway operations management and an important factor when it comes to increasing the competitiveness of railway companies. The modern operations control system platform for mainline rail traffic, Travis, developed by Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik GmbH, concentrates all tasks related to monitoring, dispatching, controlling and safety of railway operations in one or just a few locations. Centralised monitoring and controlling of railway operations and the high degree of automation increases economic efficiency, optimises timetables and services and ensures greater punctuality.

All operational information is collected and forwarded to the operations control centres, contributing in many ways to increases in the quality of railway transport. The information is used to improve internal communication as well as provide a basis for more detailed passenger information. In addition, it enables optimal deployment of personnel and resources, and also extensive evaluation of statistics, thus supplying data for continuous enhancement of transport services.

Control Centres in Operation

In one of the largest automation projects for rail transport worldwide, “Operations Control Centre” by DB Netz AG, the control and supervision levels of railway operations, which had previously been performed by separate teams of staff in separate locations, were merged. In a consortium (known as “Konsortium BZ 2000”), consisting of the companies Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik GmbH (formerly Funkwerk IT), Thales and Siemens, the current company Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik was responsible for developing the complex software and supplied the Travis system, the most important dispatching component in this challenging major project.

The operations control centres now equipped with the Travis system monitor 15,000 km of the 35,000 km in DB’s rail network with 33,000 train journeys per day, thus establishing a new quality in operations management. In Deutsche Bahn‘s PRISMA project, new computer technology was introduced and the entire software was migrated to new, advanced system platforms.

With Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and CSC, Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik GmbH jointly developed the dispatching level of the Rail Control Systems (RCS). The new system replaced the obsolete dispatching systems in the four operations control centres and provided a standardised dispatching and operations management system for SBB rail traffic. With 7,000 passenger trains and 2,000 goods trains per day and track kilometre, SBB has the most intensively utilised rail network in Europe.

With the train information system FOR, Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) are consistently pursuing the standardisation and integration of Hungarian planning and operational processes into the European railway network. The foremost feature of FOR is its close networking with already existing Hungarian systems and the European Information Association for railways. The scalability of the application at the operator level with more than 800 workplaces,  distribution of operational information via several specialised server cascades and a highly robust core of business application and persistent data storage form the backbone for connection of further systems.
