On December 19, 2022, Valley Metro executed a contract with Scheidt & Bachmann to provide a comprehensive farebox maintenance program for the City of Phoenix and Phoenix metropolitan area for the duration of 11 years. The new farebox system is part of the region’s ongoing commitment to public mobility and sustainable transit for all people. The roughly $41M service agreement expands upon the $14M agreement for a new farebox system executed in March of 2022, for approximately 900 new fareboxes plus software, vaulting, and installation.

“I am thrilled not only to continue and expand our long-term partnership with the Valley Metro Regional Public Transit Authority and the City of Phoenix Public Transit Department, but also to contribute to the modernization of their system that brings equitable transit solutions to the community” said Amy Jenks, Regional Vice President at Scheidt & Bachmann, USA Inc.

Jenks followed with, “Our continued re-investment in the region through our people, along with expanding our commitment to increasing our veteran workforce and innovating our infrastructure allows us to continue to give back to our community through this extension of our partnership”

In 2019, Scheidt & Bachmann established an Innovation Center in the Valley region to drive innovation along with technological advancement from local talents and academic resources. The direct impact of the Innovation Center has provided diverse career opportunities to the local market in a variety of management and service roles, all backed by the support of a fully committed and invested local project team.

Valley Metro, under the leadership of Jessica Mefford-Miller, ensures equity and inclusion are at the forefront of decisions made to enhance and modernize services to the public.  The new farebox system will allow Valley Metro to improve cash fare collections throughout the entire Phoenix metropolitan region and the City of Phoenix, while also ensuring critical access for the unbanked or underbanked in the region.  In addition, the modern devices will improve daily operations with an intuitive and accessible design which supports fast boarding and provides every rider with a seamless customer experience. The intelligent back-end solution allows for seamless integration with external systems leading to more efficient operations.

“Scheidt & Bachmann has been a critical partner over the last 15 years to provide transit service and access to many across the Valley,” said Valley Metro CEO Jessica Mefford-Miller. “We look forward to continuing our relationship to bring more modern, customer-friendly solutions to our passengers who rely on our service each and every day.
