Let’s talk about open payment: Welcome to the new era

Open payment is a game changer in public transport, especially for infrequent passengers or tourists. In this episode of ‘Let’s talk about open payment’, we look at what sets an open payment system apart from other systems.

Public transport made simple

An open payment system overcomes obstacles often associated with public transport: Passengers do not need to search for the cheapest fare, queue for a conventional ticket at a ticket office or vending machine or register for any kind of account up front.

Passengers simply tap to pay when boarding and exiting buses, passing gates or checking in and out at train platform validators using their contactless credit/debit card or their mobile payment app. Everything else is automatically done by the system, without any upfront user interaction. The system reliably translates taps into trips or multi-part journeys and aligns that information the best fare, according to tariff and possible fare-capping rules. After that, it creates an aggregated payment request for the journeys made, which is processed automatically, directly from the passenger’s card.

And ticket inspection? Just as easy

Passengers tap their contactless credit or debit card or media at the ticket inspector’s terminal, which then indicates if the media has been used to board.
